Mitchy-Matchy: Colorful Eye Makeup To Go With A Colorful Dress

The basic rule is that if your outfit of the day is colorful or outstanding in some way or other, eye makeup should be kept to be a minimum – at least with the colors used – so that the different elements do not contest against one another.

That’s what I normally adhere to, but you see,

“In all matters of creativity, rules are meant to be broken when necessary.” – Haley Langford

So for the first day of 2012, I wore a new, colorful, asymetrical dress and matched it with statement-making eye makeup.

Eyeshadow Primer – UDPP Eden, NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Milk

Eyelid – Sugarpill Chromalust Absinthe

Contour Area – MAC Parfait Amour

Outer V – NYX Mermaid Green

Eyeliner  – Clio Brush Liner Kill Black

Eyelash Primer – Shiseido Nourishing Mascara Base

Mascara – Lancome Oscillation Vibrating Infinite Powermascara

That’s me going home from a gathering with friends, and out again for a family dinner, at 6pm.

Cheeks – Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso

Lip Balm – Dermalogica Climate Control Lip Treatment

Lipgloss – NYX Lollipop

And……. it’s the first few minutes of Chinese New Year! Spring Cleaning was completed earlier this year, that’s why I have a little time to create this post.

Here’re some pictures I took on Thursday during our annual family trip to Chinatown to soak in the atmosphere! 😀

Back to the topic on colorful stuff, I really love that asymmetrical rainbow dress! I tied a thin red belt at the hip to create loose folds and wore taupe wedges to match. The outstanding eye makeup colors completed the whole look!

Would you match colorful eye makeup with colorful clothing?

About Bun Bun

Hello! My name is Juli and Bun Bun is my alter-ego. I blog to share my love for makeup, how to apply it, and what works or what doesn’t work, all from an Asian perspective.

My first makeup product was a shimmery light blue lipstick which I proudly wore all over my eyelids and lips. It cost $2.50, felt like $250, and made me feel like a million bucks.

Happy new year BunBun! You look AMAZING!

I actually did a matchy matchy colorful eye look with a colorful dress today myself (check the post). Wasn’t even aware of that particular rule, but I had a lot of fun!

    • Bun Bun

Hey thanks Sunny! Happy CNY to you too!

Yup, I saw. Purple and gold is a great combi! =D

  • a!kO

Oooo love the colorful matchy-matchy dress and eye makeup 😀 I am curious about the dress 😛 It looks fun. And…I love cny because of all the red decoration and lanterns everywhere lol. 😀 hope you are having an awesome Chinese new year with your family!

    • Bun Bun

It is! I loooooovvveeee that dress! If I don’t put a belt, it reaches to half my shin (I’m pretty short haha!), and looks a bit weird. With a skinny belt, layers are created, giving the entire outfit a trendy feel. I can absolutely walk down the runway with my head high up. Hoho!

Yeah, CNY is my fav time of the year! Love all the deco, food, gatherings… =) You don’t celebrate it, do you?

      • a!kO

Ahhh…. I have been crazy with maxi dresses lately but I feel I am too short for it too sometimes lol I have never tried using skinny belts tho…I am so not fashionable LOL I want to find some nice funky ones but seems now the wildfire has died down on maxi dresses.

Oh I love CNY and am glad to know some friends who celebrate them 😀 but I don’t. My bf and I would go and kinda celebrate it cause he always comes during the CNY season 😛 it’s our neutral holiday lol

        • Bun Bun

You can’t be as short as me. Lol. Yea, I think we’re on the tail-end of the maxi dress trend. It’s all fine for me coz I only have one, and it’s more for beach-resort-vacation kind of wear.

  • Jacqueline

I haven’t but I’ll try now! I love the eye look, it looks very fresh. Happy Chinese New Year too!

    • Bun Bun

Thanks Jacqueline! Happy CNY to you too! HUAT AR!

  • Jae

Ooooh! You look uber cute!! Love the eye makeup and looks like it went really well w/your dress! :) Happy new year!!

    • Bun Bun

Thanks Jae! I’m glad I took the gamble and went colorful on my body and eyes! 😛

  • wenwen

    Nice shades on you!

    • Bun Bun

Thanks wenwen! I saw that you did a green-yellow eye makeup look too. =)

      • wenwen

My man said I look like a parrot in that green yellow look. LoL

nice look! You always manage to make blending look so seamless =)
I saw the Clio gel eyeliners in watsons. Is it good? Was eyeing the violet eyeliner…

    • Bun Bun

Thanks Mel! Oh yes! I’ve bought so many products recently that I don’t know which one to review. Now that you’ve asked, I shall push forward the review for the Clio gel eyeliner! I think you’re referring to the gel eyeliner? The one I got is the brush eyeliner and…. *whispers to you*… it’s been AWESOME.

I love the green! Very gorgeous! I’m venturing into my eye make up now (besides the usual black liner) and your blog is very helpful. Love all the tips and tricks :)

    • Bun Bun

We all started off with the black liner, didn’t we? :)

Hope to see you around, Dayna!

That look is so beautiful! I will admit I am one to go all out with matching colours, so I love the idea of throwing ‘rules’ aside like this! I love the green with the lilac accent, such a gorgeous combination
