Makeup Haul: Okinawa, Japan

I love the cover picture of this post! Nice right!!! 😀

When I think of Japan, I think mad crazy colorful stuff with hiragana (Japanese characters) splattered all over the place. I think that’s what makes Japanese fashion magazine so fun to read – the characters are just there for decoration and you really focus on the apparel, accessories, makeup, etc. Taiwanese magazines follow that style rather closely, but I can read Chinese so I end up spending time trying to read the traditional Chinese characters and that takes away half the fun. Lol.

Okinawa was advertised as ‘Hawaii of the East’ by the radio station that I listen to and joined the tour group, hence the tropical feel. You can read about my awesome Okinawa trip here!

Did you manage to spot these in the first picture? You’re really sharp if you did! *clap clap whistle whistle

These are the shisa lions and they can be seen on rooftops and entrances of buildings and actually, almost everywhere in Okinawa. Used to ward off evil and keep good spirits, these traditional Ryukyuan decoration resemble a cross between a lion and a dog. They come in pairs and their gender is disputable. You really can see them everywhere as they’re from Okinawan mythology. Some look very fierce, while some look as cute as anime.

It was very nice of the tour group organizers to give each of us a pair!

Here’s what I bought at the SAN-A Naha Main Place Shopping Mall! It’s a pity I don’t have pictures to show you guys of the place and all the endless counters and shelves of products. The makeup arena is not too big, maybe….. about the size of Ngee Ann City Watsons? But I managed to stay there for two hours while The Boyfriend patiently waited.

He kept following me around and refused to go sit down for the first hour because he said he was afraid I would get kidnapped. Lol! His legs finally gave way and he went to sit down. I made sure to say hi every now and then. 😀

I tried to buy products not available in Singapore, like the Coffret D’or eyeshadow palette. I’ve seen it for YEARS in Taiwanese magazines and have yearned for it. Quite expensive though! JPY2940 ~ SGD45.00.

The Shiseido Integrate eyebrow palette is also not available in Singapore; I got to know about it from AsahiSasaki, who uses it to do her brow in almost all her videos. The Shiseido Integrate eyebrow pencil is also not available here. I got these two products at a 7-11 store. How cool!

And there’s Max Factor, a brand Lisa Eldridge loves. The counter at SAN-A didn’t have any mascara though, so I got a blusher instead. I have no idea whether it’s good or not; I just wanted to get something from Max Factor. That happens a lot when you’re on vacation right? Buy and think later.

The Shiseido Eyelash Curler is not available in Singapore! It is the small and shorter version to reach eyelashes at the outer corner of the eye. I’ve been searching long and hard for it in Singapore and resigned to the sad fact that it’s not sold here. So I was happy to have found it in Okinawa!

I bought the Kose Softymo Super Point Makeup Remover only because I had run out of my Holy Grail Eye Makeup Remover – Biore Eye & Lip Makeup Remover.

The Canmake Cream Blush… I really don’t know why I bought that! I even got the EXACT SHADE I have – Sweet Apricot! I must have been lured by the price. It cost almost half of what I paid for it in Singapore. But still, why so silly to get the same shade?! LOL! I think I’ll give this away. You want? You want? 😀

Same goes for the Canmake Gakubuto mascara. We have it here but I got it for almost half the price.

Before you think everything Japan-made is much cheaper in its country of origin, stop! It is not true and I have the Kose Esprique Foundation to prove it. I loved the texture and coverage when I did swatches and immediately assuming it must be cheaper in Japan, bought it even though it has a hefty price tag of JPY3675 ~ SGD57.00. Almost the same price as Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet Plus Foundation. When I came back, I found out the Kose Esprique Foundation is cheaper here! About 2 or 3 dollars, but still. Tsk.

In total, these cost about SGD215.00. So far I’ve only tried the Canmake Gakubuto mascara (GOOD!!!), Kose Esprique Foundation (excellent for ‘certain’ days), Kose Softymo Makeup Remover and Shiseido Eyelash Curler short version.

Just a little while back I was makeup haul-crazy and now I have so many unopened products (my Okinawa haul is still in its ziplock bag =.=”). I’ll reprimand myself for spending so much but before you (or I) know it, I’ll be hauling again. Bet it happens to you too! HAHA! *guilty laugh

I can’t give you physical Shisa lions to ward off bad luck and retain good luck, but if you stare at my virtual ones long enough, I’m sure some of its magic will reach you! 😀

Have you tried any of these products? I’m so interested to know! Do you make impulse purchases on vacation? Any great regrets?

About Bun Bun

Hello! My name is Juli and Bun Bun is my alter-ego. I blog to share my love for makeup, how to apply it, and what works or what doesn’t work, all from an Asian perspective.

My first makeup product was a shimmery light blue lipstick which I proudly wore all over my eyelids and lips. It cost $2.50, felt like $250, and made me feel like a million bucks.

Ooo I have the Shiseido eyelash curler (and love it) and I used to own the Integrate brow powder. It’s not bad, but I didn’t end up repurchasing because I got Bobbi Brown Sable along with the Eye Brow Brush (which I don’t know how I lived without). Can’t wait to see what you think about your great haul!

    • Bun Bun

Really? The short one? So far, it hasn’t performed up to my expectations yet and I find it troublesome to have to reach for another curler. I’ll have to give it more time to impress me.

  • Jyoan

I don’t like Gokubuto. I gave it quite a good rating when I reviewed many years back. But later on, I found out how it is not waterproof, and I didn’t like it anymore.

I tear a LOT. So it is disastrous when my mascara is not waterproof.

    • Bun Bun

I’m curious. You didn’t like it after it smudged on you? Then why did you give it a good rating?

      • Jyoan

oops, I just checked. I gave it 3/5. I said I was quite in love with some of Canmake’s things, but my entire post was about how it doesn’t lives up to the hype at all, and may disappoint a lot of people, including me.

What I meant was that the first impression is good because it does what it does. I put before and after pictures too, and it really does volumize.

This was a highly anticipated and hyped product on Cozycot. And I waited for it, and rushed out to buy. But sigh. Another one of those overrated products.

Yup, my post is still there, with my smudging story. haha.

        • Bun Bun

Ah shucks! Super dislike over-rated products! Like getting back-stabbed you know lol. Which Canmake products have disappointed you? I’ve only tried a couple of Canmake products, avoided the brand mainly becoz their products look so cheap and directed at giggly teenage girls, but both have turned out quite okie.

  • jm

ahh i love makeup hauls! <3

    • Bun Bun

      Hahaha me too jm! 😀

  • Melisse

Glad you had a wonderful trip, though I’m really sorry to hear about your loss of photos. Hope u feel much better now! Did you come across any candydoll or dollywink products in Japan? I love love love dollywink’s volume mascara.!!

    • Bun Bun

Thanks Melisse! Yeah, I did see dollywink products but I remember doing some calculations and they (at least for the false eyelashes) cost about the same as Watsons.

Ahhh! Another mascara recommendation! So tempting. There was a period where I had no good mascara then I started buying and buying and now I’m left with 8 to go through after throwing away those underperforming ones. So stressful HAHA. Does the dollywink volume mascara smudge? I love mascaras that claim to volumize. Love thick lashes.

      • Melisse

Ooh I really hope u get to try the mascara. It’s still being sold at selected watsons. I highly recommend it. I was (and still am) a loyal user of the Shu umera Precise volume mascara. But dollywink is nearly half the price and is just as good, if not better. IT volumises, does not clump and gives me lush looking lashes, depending on how much I want to build up. Can look super natural with just one coat too. Most importantly, it holds the curl all day long. And does not smudge. I fail mascaras if they don’t meet these 2 basic criteria. I find that volume mascaras perform better on me than lengthening ones coz of the curl. Oh and it washes off fairly easily, compared to the majolica Majorca ones that do hold curl, but clump like crazy and such a pain to remove.

And last thing, the mascara performs just as well when first opened and now (4 mths later) when the formula has dried out a fair bit. I have 3 more tubes in my drawer as back up. Enough said. :p

        • Bun Bun

Backups are proof of deepest loyalty and product excellence. *thumbs up

      • Melisse

Btw i’m sure u already know this, but just in case u missed the news, L’oreal has stocked new colours of their infallible eyeshadows which you love right? Go grab them!! I bought 3 of the new colours :)

        • Bun Bun

I know! A reader informed me too and the next day I was out at Watsons grabbing them off the shelves. HAHA!!

  • Lifong

Hey bun bun… does sg have any similar eyelash curler like the shiseido one you’ve mentioned? My outer lashes sticks out almost in line with my lids n it’s almosy impossible to curl them without tugging at my lids n making them reddish… I’m using this curler btw, which looks something like this

    • Bun Bun

Hello Lifong! Hmmm…. I’m not too sure about that. We definitely don’t have the short version of the Shiseido one, and neither does Shu Uemura carry the short one in Singapore. You can try your luck at Sasa but I don’t remember seeing any of the short ones there.

  • Jyoan

By the way, have you tried the Maquillage curler? Not Shisedo one, Shisedo Maquillage… … Personally, I find the Maquillage one better when I tried at the counter. I bought the Maquillage on the spot. =P

    • Bun Bun

The Shu Uemura one has served me very well and I haven’t thought of switching ever since I came back to it, after going one big round trying out other eyelash curlers for many years. It is such a happy feeling to have an eyelash curler that fits your eye well. So I’m glad the Maquillage one suits you to a T! I haven’t tried that though, how much is it?

      • Jyoan

wow! Good for you. I have no idea why Shu works for so many people but not me. My first curler ever is from Shu Uemura. It is just not good till I went on a curler spree. I have some almost 20 curlers now, branded and no brand.

The Maquillage one is also $19, same as Shu and Anna Sui.

        • Bun Bun

Same here. The Shiseido one works for many people, but it didn’t work for me. I shall keep the Maquillage in mind. Thanks Jyoan! 😀

  • a!kO

I love hauls!! It’s like spending money of things I don’t have/can’t get but it’s not mine 😛 I love the lion thingy it’s so adorable and put a smile to my face :) I have seen the canmake makeup at my local sasa but it didnt appeal to me and it was rather pricey too. I wanted to try the blush but the colors are too light and I didnt think it would good on me. I am not too picky about mascara. I have been using this cheap brand from my local drugstore..It works although my sister loves the ZA mascaras. I should be looking for one that works well for me 😛 I always look out for colored mascara tho, I don’t think they have a lot of colors out there. I am more picky with eyeliner tho.

    • Bun Bun

Hit the nail on the head! That’s what I love about hauls too!

Canmake is not exactly cheap here either. Costs twice more than in Japan!

You’re one adventurous girl! I’ve never fancied colored mascara as I like to focus on the eyeshadows instead of the mascara. My mascaras are always black – black, blacker, blackest. HAHA!
