5 Good Reasons Why The Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel Is The Best Face Primer For Oily Skin

After reading countless blogs and watching YouTube videos that compare the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer and Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel, I finally went ahead to get the Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel as a face primer. I’ve tried the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer at our local Sephora before and I didn’t really like that it ended up slightly flakey on my skin. I thought I might as well give the Monistat one a try since it’s much cheaper. I’m really glad I did!

I didn’t even bother looking around for it in Singapore because well, at this point in time of blogging, not a lot of US makeup brands are readily available to us. If not for Sephora planting its biggest Southeast Asia’s store in Singapore, I’d never even have the chance to try out US products.

Important note: This is NOT the Monistat yeast infection product. The Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel was developed to complement the brand’s medical products. Please make sure you get the right Monistat product, don’t go applying yeast infection gel on your face, yo! O.o

Here are 5 reasons you need the Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel as a face primer:

1. Cheap

Incredibly small price to pay for something similar to (or even better than) the mainstream Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, which costs U$32.00 (1 oz). Having found this, I shall never throw money at expensive face primer brands again.

2. Easy to apply

It comes out of the tube in gel form but turns into a silky smooth consistency the moment you apply it on your face. It glides on really well so that makeup can glide on and stay on.  To makeup last the entire day, a face primer is extremely important. Also, a little goes a long way. Read: How to apply face primer quickly.

3. Main ingredient is Dimethicone = Awesome oil mattifier

The Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel contains a form of nontoxic silicone – Dimethicone – , just like in Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer. Everything Smashbox has, Monistat also has (okie, except for pretty packaging~), but for a tiny fraction of the price. HOORAY for Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel!!

Upon application, because it dries to a powder finish, the resulting matte finish does not leave a greasy residue on my face nor fingers. The great thing about Dimethicone in a face primer is that it prevents secreted oil to surface, at the same time preventing your face makeup from getting in directly to your skin. It acts as a barrier between your skin and cosmetics products, thereby protecting it.

While it keeps my face from being overly shiny, it only keeps it matte for about till late afternoon. WHICH IS AWESOME ENOUGH! Nothing can suppress my incredibly active oil glands in this sunny side of the world and to be able to be shine-free till late afternoon is quite an achievement. I need only use a blotting paper to lightly get rid of the shine without having my makeup fall apart.

4. Fantastic foundation base

It makes my skin look smoother and makeup last longer. Foundation and concealer doesn’t sink into my pores nor does it cause any irritation to the skin. It even works for my Bare Escentuals mineral foundation, which otherwise would cake and melt into my skin and magnify my pores without a primer or with a lotion primer. The Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel smooths out my large pores, uneven skintone, softens fine lines. And it is gentle on the skin enough to be used every day! I haven’t experienced any breakouts ever since I started using this as a face primer.

5. Colorless and Odorless

It is colorless, so it won’t stain if you accidentally get it on your collar. Odor-wise, it has a very faint kerosene-like smell which will disappear once your apply it on your face.

It doesn’t bother me that the Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel really is a remedy for ‘prevention and relief from chafing and irritation in intimate, delicate areas like the inner thigh, bikini area, and under arms and breasts’. No big deal, really. It’s just like how saliva is the best way to ease itch from a mosquito bite. If it works for me, *shrugs*, I’m all for it! =D

Remember to apply your necessary facial moisturizer and sunblock and allow those a couple of minutes to set in first before applying the Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel as your face primer. Then get ready for a day of makeup that won’t budge!

About Bun Bun

Hello! My name is Juli and Bun Bun is my alter-ego. I blog to share my love for makeup, how to apply it, and what works or what doesn’t work, all from an Asian perspective.

My first makeup product was a shimmery light blue lipstick which I proudly wore all over my eyelids and lips. It cost $2.50, felt like $250, and made me feel like a million bucks.

Ooo, this makes me want to give Monistat another try! I tried it last year for about a week and while I loved the initial feeling of it, it did nothing to keep my oiliness at bay, even when used with my favorite mattifier (Phillip’s Milk of Magnesia – total HG!) =( Sephora had a wonderful primer under it’s eponymous label that worked really well for me..and of course they discontinued it! So I’m back to searching for a primer that will keep the oil slicks at bay without draining my trust fund 😉 Lol

    • Bun Bun

Hello blkrox! It’s a pity Monistat did nothing for you, but I’m guessing your moisturizer could be the one affecting it? You know, when I was previously using the Lancome Blanc Expert moisturizer, it did nothing to my face except to make it even oilier! Obviously no primer worked for my face. Then I switched to a lighter day cream and it has worked like a charm. Maybe you should check to see if your moisturizer is too oily for u. Good luck! =)

        • Bun Bun

          Hey Lilies,
Nope, sadly Sephora Singapore does not carry the Monistat brand. You can buy the Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel from Amazon.

          • Lilies

Okay thanks alot….btw this primer thing, is it safe to use daily for every single day ?n its work like a barrier between ur skin n the air(d skin still need to breath :p)…coz it contained Dimethicone (heard still controversy out there :)…)thanks Bunbun

          • Bun Bun

            Hi Lilies,

Good question! I’ve been using the Monistat Chafing Gel as a face primer daily ever since I bought it and it hasn’t done anything bad to my skin. It is quite common to find Dimethicone in face primers these days. Especially for primers that claim to be long-lasting and suitable for oily skin, you can hardly find one that does not contain Dimethicone. I wrote an article on what I think are the 5 best face primers I’ve tried, and not coincidentally, they all contain Dimethicone.

Yes, I know about the controversies over Dimethicone being safe or suitable for the face. I actually did research on this topic and there were 2 huge camps: pro-silicone and anti-silicone. Very confusing, but in the end I went for pro-silicone because with proper makeup removal and cleansing, I haven’t suffered any breakouts from the effects of using silicone-based primers. I wrote a controversial article on whether primers with silicone are safe, and a reader gave a rather in-depth explanation of the differences between occlusive and non-occlusive ingredients. You can check out that post and share your views with me. =)

I also have read on numerous blogs and reviews about this ‘magical’ product as a face primer. I have always been using Too Faced – Primed and Poreless primer, I like it, it’s not bad, it does it job, and also I haven’t breakout forever since I’ve been using this stuff, but the downside to it is that I can’t afford to be cashing out about 30 dollars for a small tube every time for a primer, so I’m looking for a cheaper alternative that does it job well too.

I have to give Monistat a try!

    • Bun Bun

My MUFE primer cost U$32 and it’s just sitting pretty in my cabinet. =( At least the Too Faced one worked for you! But OUCH! U$30 is still a lot! At least compared to the Monistat Chafing Gel, which is 1/5 of that price. Let me know when you’ve tried it! =D

  • Maureen

Is it available everywhere in singapore and easy to find? Your review is somehow encouraging me to buy this one! =) Cause I’m looking for a right solution for my extremely oily skin..

    • Bun Bun

I LOVE this for my oily skin!! But sorry Maureen, it’s not available in Singapore. :( You can join drugstore sprees, that’s how I managed to get it too.

  • _Amy

Hi bunbun just found your blog and i love it ! I want to try this so much i always have trouble with foundation who oxidize on my skin Apply foundation : right colour everything is ok 10min later : orange.. does this primer help for this problem ?
Sorry for my bad english i’m from france ..

    • BunBunMakeupTips

_AmyHello Amy! A warm welcome to my blog! =D
Oh, I totally understand what you mean by having foundations that oxidize. Terrible experience, I know.
Oxidation occurs when the chemical ingredients in the foundation reacts with the skin, which causes the foundation to appear quite different from intended. Some people experience a darker shade, others observe an orangey shade. Either way, it makes the wearer look like she doesn’t know how to choose a suitable shade, especially if the neck is not covered, so she gets an orange face and a pale neck. Not pretty!
A face primer helps in acting as a barrier between the skin and products used. Ever since I started using a face primer, I haven’t experienced any oxidation from foundation. So I think this Monistat face primer really helps.
My other favorite face primer is the Lioele Sun Chiffon Powder >> Another good one is Lioele Dollish Veil Vita, but I haven’t done a review yet. It’s available here >> Helps to neutralize the redness in my skin too. =)

      • _Amy

BunBunMakeupTips wow thank you for this super complete answer ! Well i’ll trust you and try the monistat ! Have a nice day c:

  • ckwan_95

Hi BunBun! I’m trying to look for a primer to use for prom cuz my foundation is never smooth and cannot last for more than 4 hours tops. Not only do I have super oily skin, but it is also quite acne-prone. Would you still recommend the Monistat Gel for me?? Thanks!

    • BunBunMakeupTips

ckwan_95A primer a really important! I never ever go without one, coz it helps to smoothen out the skin surface by filling in the lines and bumps, and some primers even go beyond that, like providing tone correction. I used to use the Monistat one, and I have oily+acne-prone skin. No problem at all.
But I’ve found a better one – Lioele Dollish Veil Vita BB. SUPER FAVORITE PRIMER! Lol! I use the Natural Green, which instantly counteracts the redness in my skin and brightens it.
It has worked very well for me and I use it on a daily basis. Holy Grail material.

  • adelinique

Hi bun bun. Saw your comment regarding these 2 lioele primers. Which is your ultimate fav? The vita bb or sun chiffon? Any major difference? Also, any good setting powder to recommend?:)

    Hi Bun Bun,
    Love your blog!
Is this a particular reason why we are not supposed to use this stuff as eye primer too?
