Ah Gong’s Kampung: His Childhood, Our Wedding, My New Family

Ah-Gong-Kampung-Yong-Peng-Malaysia_9

Mr Mode spent a large part of his childhood in his grandfather’s (Ah Gong) kampung in Malaysia; the place contains many beautiful and precious memories for him. I had only met Ah Gong once, when I joined Mr Mode’s family to visit Ah Gong during Chinese New Year. It was usually quite hard for my unmarried self to be with a family other than my own during the festive season, but Mr Mode and I had finally got engaged and I kind of had official reason to get to know his extended family in Malaysia.

Ah Gong’s kampung is 2-3 hours (without traffic jam) away from Singapore. No matter the occasion, you will look absolutely ridiculous and out of place if you dressed in anything more glamorous than my above #OOTD. Lol. Comfort > Style.

Mr Mode said this rusty swing has been around since forever and it’s where the most fun, the most heart-to-heart conversations, and the exchange of ideas have been made.

We had returned this time to hold the third segment of our wedding because many of his relatives do not own a passport and it was logistically difficult to have so many of them join us for our wedding in Singapore. Which was fine by me coz having a wedding in a kampung sounded fun and different!

In the evening, I changed out of my kampung gear, into something suitable for a simple wedding dinner.

This restaurant is probably the most glamorous restaurant they have in the vicinity. It’s where all kinds of events are held – weddings, celebration of 60th birthdays (hence the ‘寿’ word at the stage), family dinners, company dinners, etc. It looked like those I had been to in Singapore in the 90s.

Here’s How My Skincare Routine Has Changed After 2 Years

Acne-Pustules-Skincare-Routine_2

Instead of beautifully packaged bottles of serums, moisturizers, anti-aging creams and the sort, my skincare drawer is filled with clinical-looking tubes labelled with medical terms to tackle my crazy skin (more pictures below). I have acne and sensitive skin, which was exacerbated by the terrible facial I experienced more than 2 years ago.

You can read my previous skincare post here: My Skincare Regime (March, 2014)

My skincare routine seems to be of interest to many, so here’s an updated post on the products I use on a daily basis, their functions, those that I use when an outbreak happens, and more. Please remember that I am not qualified in any way to give accurate medical and technical explanations. 😛 . All these are based on my personal experience, from a consumer point of view. Most drugs mentioned in this post are controlled and can only be prescribed by doctors.

I have so far seen two dermatologists, both of whom have helped a lot with my skin issues. They are Dr Joyce from JOYCE LIM CLINIC, and Dr Gerard from CLIFFORD CLINIC. Oh, actually I saw another skin doctor at National Skin Centre, which was a real waste of time and MONEY. I wrote about it on my Dayre: Doctors who don’t give a shit (Sad to know that many people have had bad experiences with lousy doctors too)

Skincare Essentials

Currently, these are the products I use on a daily basis, in the following sequence:

Acne-Pustules-Skincare-Routine_3

[1] Aknicare Cleanser

It states that it is a ‘solution for removal of excessive sebum from acneic and seborrhoeic skin’. It is a liquid cleanser specially formulated for acne. When my skin goes into unpredictable periods of super dry and scaly skin, I use less of this and switch to Joyce Lim Foam Cleanser (forgot to include it in the picture) which I feel is milder. When my skin recovers from the dryness, I use this Aknicare Cleanser. It cleans well and I think has helped to balance out excessive sebum.

This bottle is my third repurchase from Clifford Clinic. Mr Mode secretly used it and I wondered how I managed to use it up so quickly. Lol. So I bought a bottle for him, and wrote his name on it. *territorial*

[2] T2 Clindamycin Lotion

This is for the ‘topical treatment of acne vulgaris’. I dab it on affected areas and the tingly feeling can sometimes sting/hurt my super-sensitive skin, especially when it’s very, very dry. But I think I’m used to/addicted to that kind of pain. #sadlaugh

I was prescribed this by the NSC doctor, which Dr Gerard later confirmed as good. I guess that’s the only good thing that came out of NSC.

For Something So Lightweight, Curel BB Cream Amazes With Perfect Coverage

Curel-BB-Cream-Review-Swatches_1

A month ago, Curel sent me their newest BB Cream and it has never left my makeup bag ever since.

As a person with sensitive skin, I am always apprehensive when it comes to trying new skincare and foundations since these are the ones applied closest to the epidermis. Lightweight makeup products usually don’t provide much coverage and those with better coverage usually don’t allow my skin to breathe, thereby clogging up my pores.

It was always a struggle having to decide whether to let my skin breathe or cover up my blemishes. Obviously the need to allow my skin to breathe was of higher priority, but as a working professional I personally don’t feel quite right meeting people looking like I just got out of bed and didn’t make the effort to look presentable. So I covered up, but my skin didn’t fancy a lot of them and started retaliating.

Bad skin = Need to cover up = Clogged pores = Bad skin

It was a vicious cycle! :(

I’m a great fan of Curel products. Mr Mode and I both love Curel Body Wash so much we have repurchased it 4 times ourselves. I foresee this being a staple in our bathroom for a long time.

Naturally I was very happy to try the latest Curel BB Cream. Love the sweet pastel pink tube!

From the very first time I tried it on until now, I have been impressed in more ways than one: at how well it applies – it is creamy, very easy to blend with both fingers and a brush; how pigmented it is – it makes me forget to apply concealer sometimes because it covers up blemishes even some foundations cannot; how lightweight it feels on my skin; how long it lasts for something so lightweight.

Before & After

Here’s a comparison of my blemished care skin and one with a sheer layer of Curel BB Cream applied:

Curel BB Cream makes my skin look more even-toned, brightens up my complexion, and conceals blemishes. Of course, on days when I need more coverage for the undereyes and more serious acne marks, I apply concealer. But on its own, I’m already very impressed by just how much of my blemishes can be concealed.

That Bridal Glow: Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush Review

Dior-Rosy-Glow-Healthy-Glow-Awakening-Blush-Review_2

I never understood why brides aimed to have the perfect bridal glow – until I became a bride myself.

The ‘bridal glow’ came naturally, a flush made of feelings of love, excitement, nervousness, and anticipation as I walked down the aisle towards a future with my husband.

But that flush was also due in part to the *secret revealed* Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush that I wore for both the garden wedding and dinner banquet. Heh heh.

I was taken aback by the neon pink slab of powder when I first saw my MUA taking it out of her bag, but she assured me it was a blush that fits 80% of her clients.

– Beautiful 3D Dior monogram –

When applied, it indeed looked natural and nothing like the scary neon pink that screamed the 80s.

In the months following my wedding, I hunted down this blush but always got put off by the price tag. =O Besides, when it was my turn to swatch it, I could not get past the bizarre neon pink. When I decided to bite the bullet and get it, it was ALWAYS out of stock! It was many months later that I finally found it at NEX Sephora and since there was a 20% Sephora sale, HAD.TO.GET.IT.

So I brought it home, tried it, and absolutely hated it.

It made my face look bloated, like I got smacked on my left cheek, then the right. My many years of playing with blushes meant nothing in the face of Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush. I could not get the application right and after the third attempt, I gave up. It stayed abandoned in my makeup mess for many months before I picked it up again.

This time, I think I’m getting the hang of it! Funny how this is happening considering I changed nothing in my application. Oh okie, maybe a little, which is a lot. Lol.
